States have power to regulate industrial harassment: Supreme Court

  • The Supreme Court ruled that states have the power to regulate the production and distribution of industrial fuels.
  • The Supreme Court held that ‘industrial intoxication’ is included within the ambit of the expression ‘intoxicating liquor’ mentioned under the state list in the Seventh Schedule to the Constitution.
  • Industrial grade ‘ethyl alcohol’ contains 95 percent ethanol.
  • Ethyl alcohol is one of the ingredients in wine.
  • The term ‘intoxicating liquor’ as defined in Entry 8 classified under the State List in the Seventh Schedule to the Constitution includes all alcoholic beverages and raw materials for the manufacture of liquor which are injurious to the health of the public.
  • This includes industrial alcohol (industrial alcohol).
  • The formula for ethyl alcohol or ethanol is CH 3 CH 2 OH.

Integrated Child Development Scheme: (ICDS)

  • The study found that 77 percent of children aged 6 to 23 months in India do not get adequate nutrition as recommended by the World Health Organization.
  • The Integrated Child Development Program is a program to improve the nutritional status of children up to 6 years of age, adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating mothers.
  • In 1975, on Mahatma Gandhi’s 106th birth anniversary, the Integrated Child Development Scheme was launched for the first time in 33 districts.
  • In the financial year 2016-2017, the Government of India reorganized the ICDS into an umbrella scheme. In 2017, the Government of India incorporated National Nutrition Group (NNM), Pradhan Mantri Mathru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY), and ICDS under one umbrella.
  • Pradhan Mantri Mathru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) – This scheme is being implemented from 2018-2019 by Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine.
  • The Integrated Child Development Program was launched by the Government of India in 1975 to combat child hunger and malnutrition.
  • Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS) is a Central Government funded scheme.
  • The objective of the Integrated Child Protection Program is to create a safe environment for children in critical and problematic situations.

Patel’s 150th Birthday:

  • Patel was born on October 31, 1875 in Nadiad, Gujarat.
  • Being the first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of India, he is credited with merging more than 550 princely states with the Indian Union.
  • Since 2014, the central government has been observing Patel’s birthday as ‘Rashtriya Ekta Diwas’ or National Unity Day to show Patel’s commitment to strengthening the unity, integrity and security of the country.
  • The Central Government has planned various programs across the country for two years to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

5 Anti-dumping duty on Chinese goods:

  • The central government has imposed an ‘import anti-accumulation duty’ on 5 Chinese products, namely glass, cellophane transparent film, isopropyl alcohol, Sulphur black, and thermoplastic polyurethane, which have been accumulated in India at low prices.
  • Cheap goods from various countries including China are being dumped into India.
  • Due to this the domestic manufacturers are severely affected.
  • In order to prevent this, the central government imposes anti-dumping duty on certain goods.
  • An anti-dumping duty is an additional protective duty imposed by the government on foreign companies that sell their goods below fair market prices and hurt domestic producers.
  • Such a tax is imposed to protect domestic producers, prevent monopoly in the market and ensure trade stability.

Demand for artificial rain to control air pollution in Delhi:

  • Artificial rain is when the clouds in the atmosphere come directly above the place where it is supposed to rain, chemicals are sprinkled to make rain clouds and it rains.
  • Cloud seeding is used to create this artificial rain.
  • In this method, chemicals such as silver iodide, sodium chloride, potassium iodide, etc. are carried in particulate form and sprinkled on the clouds.
  • These particles act as a catch and hold the raindrops together.
  • Chemicals are built up on the underside of an airplane, carried up into the cloud, and dispersed there.
  • With the help of small rockets, these chemicals are carried to the clouds and spread there.
  • Chemicals are released from these towers when rain clouds approach.

  • United Nations Day is observed every year on 24 October to mark the anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter.

  • World Development Information Day is celebrated every year on October 24 to draw the world’s attention to development issues and the need to strengthen international cooperation to address them.

  1. A joint working group meeting will be held on October 29 with the participation of Indian-Sri Lankan officials regarding the issue of fishermen between the two countries.
  2. The Department of Public Welfare has implemented integrated emergency maternity and child health care centers to avoid perinatal deaths.
  3. Star Rating Award for NLC Mines is given by the Ministry of Coal.
