Athikadavu-Avinashi Project:

  • Chief Minister M.K.Stalin will inaugurate the Athikadavu-Avinashi project which is a dream project of three districts of Erode, Tirupur and Coimbatore.
  • The Athikadavu-Avinashi project was started to raise the ground water level by filling the ponds and ponds of 3 districts namely Coimbatore, Tirupur and Erode and for the needs of agriculture and drinking water.
  • On February 28, 2019, former Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami visited Avinashi and laid the foundation stone for the Athikadavu-Avinashi project.

“Mudhalvar Marunthagam” Project:

  • Chief Minister M.K.Stalin announced that the ‘Mudhalvar Marunthagam’ scheme will be implemented to provide medicines at low cost.
  • The government will implement a new scheme called ‘Mudhalvar Marunthagam’ to make generic drugs and other medicines available at low cost.
  • Under this scheme, 1,000 dispensaries will be opened in the first phase.
  • To implement this scheme, pharmacists and co-operative organizations will be given a grant of Rs 3 lakh along with necessary loan assistance.

‘Mudhalvarin Kakkum Karangal’ Scheme:

  • Chief Minister M.K.Stalin announced that a new scheme called ‘Mudhalvarin Kakkum Karangal’ will be introduced to improve the livelihood of ex-servicemen.
  • Under this scheme, ex-servicemen will be provided with a loan of up to Rs 1 crore through banks to start a business.
  • 30 per cent capital subsidy and 3 per cent interest subsidy will be given to businesses started under this scheme.
  • They will be given skill and entrepreneurship development training by the government.
  • Families of soldiers who died during military service can also benefit under this scheme.

Best Corporation Award for Coimbatore:

  • Chief Minister M. K. Stalin presented the award for the best corporation to the Coimbatore Corporation.
  • The Chief Minister’s Award is given annually to the best local bodies in order to improve their performance and to promote competitive spirit among them based on their performance.
  • Based on that, the Coimbatore Corporation has been adjudged as the best Municipal Corporation in Tamil Nadu this year.

SSLV Rocket:

  • The SSLV rocket carrying the EOS-08 Earth observation satellite will be launched on August 16 from Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
  • The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has designed a state-of-the-art satellite called EOS-08 for Earth observation operations.
  • It is about 475 km from the ground. To be positioned in a distant low-Earth orbit.
  • The EIR instrument is deployed for disaster management, environmental monitoring, and taking precise images at night.

Kumari Ananthan’s ‘Thagaisal Tamizhar’ award:

  • Chief Minister M.K.Stalin conferred the ‘Thagaisal Tamizhar’ award to Kumari Ananthan.
  • APJ for Science and Technology ISRO scientist P. Veeramuthuvel, who served as Chandrayaan 3 project director, received the award named after Abdul Kalam.
  • Nilgiri district nurse A. Sabina, who bravely carried a first-aid kit to people caught in a landslide in Wayanad, was awarded the Kalpana Chawla Award for bravery and adventure.

August 16: Battle of Bennington Day

  • Battle of Bennington Day is observed annually on August 16 to honour the Battle of Bennington, which took place on August 16, 1777.
