Conference of State Governors: New Delhi

  • The State Governors’ Conference began at the President’s House in Delhi.
  • All state governors, central ministries, high officials of various ministries and others have participated in this 2-day conference under the leadership of President Droupadi Murmu.
  • The Conference of Governors will discuss in detail issues that play an important role in improving Centre-State relations and promote welfare schemes for common people.

Governors act as a bridge between Central and State Governments:

  • Governorship is an important post within the constitutional framework and plays a major role in the welfare of all the people especially the tribals.
  • Governors of India are appointed by the President of India.
  • Governors and Lieutenant Governors are appointed by the President for a term of five years.
  • According to Article 153 of the Constitution of India each state has a Governor.
  • It does not restrict that only one person can be the governor of two or more states.
  • Generally, the Head of Government of the respective states is the Governor appointed by the President of India as per the decision taken by the Central Government.
  • The Governor is sworn in by the Chief Justice of the High Court of the State in which he takes office.
  • In his absence the Senior Judge next in rank or in the State will deputize.
  • State Ministers can take decisions in case of governor’s emergency, overriding the Chief Minister’s instructions.
  • In case of emergency, the Governor will be responsible for governing the state.
  • And he will act like an agent in the state executing the orders of the President during those times.
  • The Governor is the chancellor of all the state universities in the state.
  • The Governor acts as a bridge between the Central Government and the State Government.

Ecological Protected Area in the Western Ghats: Release of the 6th Draft Report

  • Ecological Conversation area covers 56,825 sq. km in the Western Ghats stretching from Gujarat to Tamil Nadu. The central government has released the 6th draft report regarding the declaration of the area as an ecological conservation area.
  • According to this draft report, Kerala has an area of ​​9,993.7 sq km. It is proposed to declare the area as an Ecological Conservation Area.
  • 449 sq km in Gujarat, 17,340 sq km in Maharashtra, 1,461 sq km in Goa, 20,668 sq km in Karnataka, 6,914 sq km in Tamil Nadu. It is proposed to declare the area as an Ecological Conservation Area.
  • There will be a complete ban on setting up new mines and stone-soil quarries in places declared as ecological protection areas.
  • Existing mines will be phased out within 5 years from the date of publication of the final report or the date of expiry of the current mining lease.
  • There is no ban on setting up primary health centers which have already been planned as per the provisions of the law.
  • In 2010, the Central Government set up an expert committee on ecology headed by environmentalist Madhav Gadgil to study the impact of population growth, climate change and development activities on the Western Range.
  • In the recommendation given by this committee in 2011, it was informed that the entire hill should be declared as an ecological conservation area.
  • In 2013, the Central Government set up a High Altitude Task Force under the leadership of space explorer K. Kasturirangan regarding the protection of the Western Ghats.
  • This group covers 37 percent of the Western Range ie 59,940 sq km. Identified the area as an Ecological Conservation Area.

Prime Minister’s Health Insurance Scheme Covers Third Gender:

  • As of August 2022, 3,029 transgenders have been covered under the Ayushman Bharat Prime Minister’s Health Insurance Scheme.
  • The Ayushman Bharat scheme was launched across the country on September 25, 2018.
  • Ayushman Bharat Yojana is also known as Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana (PMJAY).
  • It is a scheme aimed at helping the economically weaker sections of the society in need of healthcare facilities.
  • It is basically a health insurance scheme to provide to the poor, lower sections of the society and vulnerable people.
  • Considered one of the largest health schemes in the world, Ayushman Bharat Yojana aims to serve more than 50 crore Indian citizens.
  • It offers medical insurance plans with a maximum sum assured of Rs.5 lakh.
  • The government health insurance scheme covers most of the medical treatment expenses, including medicines, diagnosis and pre-hospitalization expenses.

Gaganyaan Veer Subhanshu Shukla Dev for International Space Station Mission:

  • ISRO announced that among the 4 astronauts nominated for the Gaganyaan project, Group Captain Subhanshu Shukla will go to the International Space Station.
  • Group captain Prashanth Balakrishnan has been selected as his replacement.
  • ISRO plans to send humans into space next year under Gaganyan project.
  • As a prelude to that, Indian Prime Minister Modi announced plans to send an Indian astronaut to a foreign space station this year.

August 3: Global Clove Syndrome Awareness Day

  • Every year August 3 is observed as Clove Syndrome Awareness Day worldwide. The day aims to spread awareness about the rare genetic disorder.
