‘Mudhalvar Marundhagam’ Scheme:

  • The ‘Mudhalvar Marundhagam’ scheme, which sells medicines at very low prices, will be launched across Tamil Nadu.
  • Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will inaugurate the scheme at a pharmacy set up in Pondy Bazaar, Chennai.
  • A total of 1,000 ‘Mudhalvar Marundhagam’ will be opened, including 500 pharmacies through entrepreneurs and 500 through the cooperative sector.
  • ‘Mudhalvar Marundhagam’ will be launched in all 38 districts.
  • People with diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease have to take pills every day, and this scheme is being launched to save people from this burden.

Ziegenbalg Memorial Day:

  • The 306th memorial day of Ziegenbalg was observed in Tharangambadi.
  • Ziegenbalg, who hailed from Denmark, arrived in Tharangambadi on 9 July 1706 AD.
  • In 1715, he set up a printing press, paper mill, ink factory, and a workshop for producing Tamil characters from metals such as brass and lead in the Kaduthasi workshop at Poraiyar near Tharangambadi with a printing press imported from Germany.
  • After that, he printed countless Tamil books such as Thirukkural, Tholkappiyam, Purananuru, and Aathisudi from parchment and published them as books.
  • He built the first church in Asia, the New Jerusalem Temple, in Tharangambadi in 1718.
  • He died on 23 February 1719.

February 24: Central Excise Tax Day.

  • Central Excise Day 2023 is observed on 24 February every year to commemorate the enactment of the Central Excise and Salt Act, 1944.
  • The Central Board of Excise and Customs is the body responsible for administering indirect taxes in India.
