China’s giant dam on Brahmaputra:

  • China has decided to build the world’s largest dam at a cost of 1 trillion yuan across the Brahmaputra River, which flows through its occupied Tibet.
  • The dam is to be built in the valley where the Brahmaputra River meanders through the largest valley in the Himalayas and flows through Arunachal Pradesh and Assam into Bangladesh.
  • The Brahmaputra River is one of the largest perennial rivers in Asia.
  • The Brahmaputra River originates from the Chemayungdung Glacier, east of Lake Mansarovar in the Kailash Mountains.
  • The river originates in the Kailash Mountains in Tibet as the ‘Tsang-Bo’, enters Arunachal Pradesh as the Siang, and then reaches the plains.
