POCSO Act: Appointment of ‘Support Persons’
- In the POCSO case last year, the Supreme Court said, ‘True justice in crimes against children does not come from the arrest of the perpetrator or the severity of the punishment.
- The support and protection provided to the victim is achieved by making it available.
- Accordingly, appropriate guidelines should be framed to ensure proper implementation of Rule 12 of the POCSO Act, 2020.
- The Central Government and the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights issued an order to appoint an ‘Support Persons’ on behalf of the Child Welfare Committee to assist the child victims under the POCSO Act.
- According to this order, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights framed appropriate guidelines.
- The Supreme Court directed the state governments to respond on the steps taken to appoint a legal aid person for child victims of sexual abuse.
- The POCSO Act came into force on 14 November 2012 as a result of India’s ratification of the 1992 United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
- The purpose of this special act is to address the crimes of sexual exploitation and sexual abuse of children.
Prime Minister’s Employment Guarantee Scheme: Jammu and Kashmir tops
- According to the central government, Jammu and Kashmir and Tamil Nadu have the maximum number of states in the country who have received the benefits of the Prime Minister’s Employment Guarantee Scheme.
- At least Puducherry and Chandigarh have got employment benefits.
- It is said that there is not even one in Lakshadweep.
- The Prime Minister’s Employment Scheme was created on 15th August 2008 by amalgamating both the Prime Minister’s Rojgar Yojana (PMRY) and the Rural Employment Generation Programme (REGP).
- Creation of self-employment opportunities in rural and urban areas through small scale industries.
- Integrating traditional entrepreneurs, rural/urban unemployed people and creating self-employment in their locality as far as possible.
- Prevent migration of unemployed youth to urban areas by providing continuous and permanent employment to rural, urban and traditional entrepreneurs.
- It aims to increase employment in rural and urban areas by enhancing the income-generating capacity of traditional entrepreneurs.
Paris Olympics: Neeraj Chopra wins silver, hockey team gets bronze
- India’s reigning Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra won the silver medal in men’s javelin at the Paris Olympics.
- He won the gold medal in the last Olympic Games and won the silver medal in this event.
- This is India’s first silver medal at the Paris Olympics.
- Indian men’s hockey team won the bronze medal.
- Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem won gold with an Olympic record throw of 92.97m, while Grenada’s Anderson Beets took bronze.
